Ingredients
Instructions
1. Prepare Meatball Mixture: In a large bowl, gently combine ground beef, pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, milk, egg, minced garlic, parsley, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
2. Form Meatballs: Roll mixture into 1.5-inch balls.
3. Sear Meatballs: Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Brown meatballs in batches on all sides. Remove and set aside.
4. Start Sauce: In the same skillet, add 2 tbsp olive oil. Sauté chopped onion until softened (5-7 min). Add minced garlic and cook 1 min more until fragrant.
5. Simmer Sauce: Pour in crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce. Add red wine (if using) and simmer 2-3 min. Stir in basil, oregano, sugar, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using).
6. Add Meatballs to Sauce: Return seared meatballs to sauce. Cover and simmer on low for at least 30 minutes, or up to 1 hour. Stir occasionally.
7. Prepare Rolls: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Slice hoagie rolls lengthwise, leaving one side attached. Brush cut sides with melted butter.
8. Toast Rolls: Bake rolls for 5-7 minutes until lightly golden.
9. Assemble Subs: Spoon meatballs and sauce into toasted rolls.
10. Add Cheese and Bake: Top with mozzarella and provolone cheese. Bake for 5-10 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
11. Serve: Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot.
