Muddle the Fruit and Sugar: In a large pitcher, combine the sliced orange and lemon with the sugar. Using a wooden spoon or muddler, gently mash the fruit. The goal is not to pulverize it but to release some of the juices and help the sugar dissolve. This step is crucial for infusing the sangria with the natural sweetness and aroma of the fruit. About 1 minute should be sufficient.
Combine the Wet Ingredients: Pour in the fresh orange juice, Triple Sec, and chilled red wine. Stir gently to combine all the ingredients. Avoid over-stirring as it can make the wine taste bitter.
Chill and Infuse: Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for a minimum of 2 hours, but preferably 8 hours or even overnight. This allows the flavors to meld and deepen, creating a smoother and more complex sangria. The longer it sits, the better it gets!
Serve and Enjoy: Just before serving, add 6 to 8 ice cubes to the pitcher. Stir briskly to distribute any settled fruit and pulp. Serve immediately in wine glasses or tall glasses filled with ice. Garnish with additional fruit slices, if desired.
